During a routine inspection

We spent time with patients who were receiving treatment on the day of our inspection. We invited them to share with us their experience and views of treatment and care at Southport NHS Dialysis Unit.

The patients we spoke with were satisfied with their care, treatment and support. One patient said, 'The staff are excellent. They are nice and friendly.' Another patient told us, 'They [the staff] are very efficient; they know what they are doing.' Patients told us they received good information about their treatment plan.

Clear processes were in place in relation to infection control and the recruitment of staff. Structures were established at both local and provider level for monitoring the quality and safety of the service.

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We inspected the service in July 2012 and identified a minor concern with outcome 7; Safeguarding people who use the service from abuse. The manager produced an action plan to address this matter and subsequently provided evidence which showed that staff had attended an adult safeguarding course.

During a routine inspection

We spent time with patients who were receiving treatment on the day of our inspection. We invited them to share with us their experience and views of treatment and care at Southport NHS Dialysis Unit. Patients told us they were happy with the service. They said they were treated with dignity and respect. One patient said 'they [the staff] are brilliant; I would be lost without them.' We also heard 'I have been treated well with food and drinks being provided whilst I am here.'

Patients told us that the staff were attentive and quick to respond if they needed anything. One patient said 'I feel the support is at the right level. I know all the staff and can ask for help or speak to any of them'.

Patients said they were involved in discussions about their treatment plan and were aware of who their named nurse was. They had a good awareness of potential treatment options, including transplantation and home dialysis.
