During a routine inspection

During our visit to Aston Cross Dialysis Unit we spoke with eleven people who were receiving dialysis treatment. We also spoke with four members of staff and reviewed documents that were made available to us.

The people we spoke with were generally satisfied with the care and treatment they received at the unit. They told us that they felt safe and that the staff treated them with respect. Comments we received about the service included: 'It's alright, no complaints'; 'It's good, I enjoy coming here, the staff are brilliant' and 'It's adequate.'

We found that people were cared for by staff who received appropriate training and support to enable them to meet the needs of people. Staffing levels were adequate but sometimes staff were working very long shifts to meet this.

Although practices in place supported infection control on the unit, the flooring was in need of replacement to ensure the premises could be properly cleaned.

There were systems in place to monitor the quality of the service. Feedback about the service was mixed and responses from the provider did not always adequately manage the expectations of people who used the service as to what could be achieved.

During a routine inspection

People using the service generally told us they were happy with the unit and they were treated with respect. They told us they were 'looked after well'. People were happy with the treatment they received and they felt safe coming to the unit.

People told us that they thought the staff were 'very good', although some thought the unit sometimes seemed to be short of staff. They told us that the unit was 'clean' and that 'staff wash their hands' or used hand cleaning gel when they moved on to look after a new person.

People using the service told us that if they had a concern, 'I could complain to any of the staff' and that staff 'would usually do something about it.' Several people said there was 'nothing I want to complain about.'
