All Inspections

4 June 2014

During a routine inspection

A single inspector carried out this inspection. The focus of the inspection was to answer five key questions; is the service safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led? The summary describes what people using the service and the staff told us, what we observed and the records we looked at. We looked at the care records of three people; spoke with two people who used the service, one member of staff, the owners and the manager.

Below is a summary of what we found.

Is the service safe?

Care plans had details of people's needs and how these were to be met. These plans were regularly reviewed with the person using the service. Risk assessments relating to the care and support being provided were regularly reviewed to ensure people's individual needs were being met safely. People were supported to take their medicines in a safe way.

People were involved in making decisions about their care and how they wanted to be cared for. The premises were well maintained and clean. Staff had undertaken training on the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and understood how this could impact on the people they cared for.

Is the service effective?

People received effective care from staff that were trained and supported by the manager. People we spoke with told us that they were provided with clear information which helped them understand the care and treatment choices available to them. People were involved in assessments of their health and care needs and in writing their plan of care.

Is the service caring?

The service was caring. This was confirmed by all the people we spoke with. Staff respected peoples' privacy, dignity and their right to be involved in decisions and to make choices about their care and treatment. Care plans we viewed detailed people's preferences, so that staff knew people's individual wishes.

Is the service responsive?

People's needs were reassessed on a regular basis and we saw the service responded to any changing needs. The provider responded to appropriately to people's complaints.

Is the service well-led?

Medihands Healthcare was privately owned and the provider had two other care homes in the local area. It was clear from our observations that they knew the people who used the service well. People using the service and staff we spoke with said the leadership of the service was excellent and it was a good place to work. Staff felt well supported to raise any concerns and said they were always acted on.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with the three people who use the service, one member of staff, the owner/manager and health professionals during this inspection.

People told us that they were "happy living at the home", saying they "visited and chose to come", "feel safe", "like the food" and "staff are around to help when needed". People said they would speak with the manager or staff if they had any concerns and felt that they would be listened to although they had not made any complaints. We saw the owner and staff had detailed knowledge of people and the care and support they needed.

Health professionals said that staff worked well with them to provide appropriate care and support to the people who use the service, following care plans and seeking and taking advice appropriately. They said staff were available to attend meetings, knew the information that was needed and the signs that indicated individuals were becoming unwell.

Staff were happy to be working at the home and said that they had the training and support they needed to carry out their role.
