All Inspections

During a routine inspection

We spoke to three of the four people who were living at the home. None of them raised any concerns regarding their care. Two people told us they thought the home was 'okay.'

They told us that they liked the staff and that they were 'nice.' They told us that the staff supported them in taking their medications.

They told us they were able to choose what they did during the day and were happy with the activities they were offered. When we visited we found that some people were undertaking activities. However, other people were not taking part in any meaningful activities.

When we visited the home we found the environment was not being adequately maintained to ensure that it was safe for the people using the service. We also found that at night there was only member of staff working at the home.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

On this occasion people that use the service did not want to talk to us. When we gave people the opportunity to comment on the service, one person said: 'I'm alright. If I had any problems to raise, I would tell you'.

Throughout the inspection we saw that people were able to come and go as they wished. We also saw that staff knocked and waited before entering people's rooms.

Since our last inspection, the provider had hung pictures on the walls in communal areas. But overall, the home was shabby in appearance and did not provide a sufficiently homely environment for people using the service.

We had concerns about the smoky environment we experienced at the home and the fact that this had not improved since our last inspection. There was evidence that people continued to smoke in their rooms and other areas of the home in breach of the provider's policy on smoking. The dual use of the lounge as a designated smoking area was also a concern given that at least one person using the service did not smoke.

The provider sought feedback from people using the service and conducted a detailed survey annually. We saw a copy of the results from December 2010. People had responded positively about being treated with dignity and respect and other aspects of the care they received at the provider's homes at that time.

During a routine inspection

Overall we found that Denron Lodge provides a good quality of service and the majority of people we spoke with who live in the home were satisfied with the support they receive. They said that the staff were very friendly and supportive. One person thought the staff could be more visible in the home and spend more time with people in the service. The service had made several improvements meeting all requirements made at a previous inspection.
