During a routine inspection

Some of the people who lived at St.Hilary were unable to tell us about their experiences.

We spoke with three people who lived at St.Hilary and all the comments we received were positive. One person told us, 'I am happy here, they look after me and meet my needs'. Another person told us, 'The food is good and the staff are friendly'.

We spoke with one relative of a person who lived at St.Hilary. They told us they were satisfied with the care provided and they were informed of the progress concerning the person they were visiting.

People were protected from abuse. Staff were trained and supported to carry out their roles.

Staff told us training was provided, and also confirmed that staff supervision took place.

Care plans and associated documentation provided sufficient detail to direct and guide staff of the action they needed to take in order to meet people's assessed care needs.

People's records were personalised and provided clear information about the person's wishes and abilities.

Some of the people who used the service were not able to comment in detail about the service they receive due to their healthcare needs. We spoke to three people who used the service. They told us they were happy to live at St.Hilary. One person said, 'the staff look after us'. Another person said, 'the food is good and we get a choice'. A visitor told us they were pleased with the care their relative received at St.Hilary. We spent time observing people and staff. We saw people's privacy and dignity was respected by staff. We saw people chatted with each other and with staff.

During our observations, we saw staff helping people to mobilise. We saw staff assisting people to eat their lunch. We saw people talking to each other at lunch and saw that staff interactions with people were generally positive.

We heard care workers ask people what they would like to do and offer ideas if they could not make a choice.

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights.

People who used the service, staff and visitors were protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

We spoke with people using the service, who were able; they were all very complementary about the care provided at the home and the kindness of the staff. One person told us 'Its wonderful here, I have no complaints at all, food lovely, lots of choice, staff are lovely, I chose to come here, no regrets'.

People told us that they felt supported by the staff and that they felt safe. They told us they know who the management of the home were and that they could speak to them.

People told us that they had choices and that they could decide how they spent their time. People were pleased with the standard and choice of food available.

Relatives and health professionals who visit the home told us that they were always made welcome and that staff were helpful.
