During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people using the service and six relatives. We spoke with a visiting GP and another health care professional. Positive comments were made by all the people we spoke with.

Comments from people using the service included, "I can't speak highly enough of this place. Every single one of the carers is fantastic". Another person said, "I don't sleep well at night. Staff are aware and make tea and come and talk to me in the middle of the night. This helps me. Staff are excellent".

People had been involved in planning and reviewing their care and treatment. Where people did not have the capacity to do so, relatives were involved in making decisions in their best interests. People were able to make choices about their daily lives and these were respected.

People's care records contained detailed information about their needs. Staff knew how they wished to be supported. People had access to a range of health specialists as part of their care and treatment. Relatives told us that they were involved and always kept informed of any changes in people's health or personal care needs.

There was a safe system of medication in place. People received their medicines safely and as prescribed.

Staff had been appropriately trained and received supervision and appraisal to monitor and improve their performance.

The provider and manager had effective systems in place to regularly assess and monitor quality and improve the service.

During a routine inspection

There were 22 people living at The Old Vicarage at the time of our visit. We spoke with four people living in the home and everyone was happy with the care and support they received. One person said 'I didn't want to come and live in a home but now I have, I'm glad I did, it's nice here.'

A number of areas around the home had been recently refurbished, including communal bathrooms and a number of bedrooms. The people we spoke with were happy with the improvements in the home and liked the d'cor in their rooms.

We saw that people received appropriate assistance for any medical conditions and were supported to attend hospital appointments and follow advice or instructions given by their doctor or other specialists. People were supported to make decisions about their care, both in the home and with medical professionals.

Everyone we spoke with said that there was enough staff in the home. People told us that if they needed staff there was always someone available and that if they used their call bell, staff responded quickly.
