During a routine inspection

We spoke with six of the sisters living in the home. They spoke of their views and experiences living at Sisters of the Cross and Passion. All the sisters we spoke with told us they were very satisfied with the care and support provided to them. One person said, 'Can't fault a thing everything is done properly'. Another person said 'Staff are very attentive and caring'. The people we spoke with said they felt they were involved in all aspects of their care and support.

We looked at how the home managed people's dietary needs.Comments included, 'You never go hungry here. It's nice to get the homemade cakes with your drink in the afternoon'. This home was based on the values and beliefs of the catholic church. As such festival days were recognised by providing meals associated with the festival. The catering manager told us on such days special menus were put in place. This included adding courses and providing wine with food.

The home had a relaxed atmosphere with people moving freely around the service. Comments from people included, 'What lovely place to live. I am lucky to have such a nice home with lovely staff to help me.' Also, 'I am always asked what I would like to eat every day, there is always a good choice'.

People we spoke with told us they liked the facilities available to them at the home. This included comments about individual rooms. One person said, 'I have everything I need in here its home from home'.

During a routine inspection

We spoke individually with two of the Sisters living at the Cross and Passion Convent. We asked about their experiences of living at the Convent. The Sisters told us they were pleased to be there, that they were very content, could make decisions for themselves and that they had been consulted about their plan of care.

We were also told by one Sister that they were, 'Killed with kindness, they (the staff) are all so very good and they are so willing'. Another Sister described the staff as, 'Very kind and thoughtful they put themselves out to help you. We are very well looked after the level of care is outstanding'.

Members of staff were consistent in telling us that the level of care provided was, 'Absolutely 110%'. Another person described that care as, 'Exceptional', while a third member of staff said, 'I go home with a sense of achievement because the care has been so excellent and because we are able to do what was meant to be done very well. The Sisters can make decisions for themselves if they are able. If any of the Sisters was unhappy I think I would know'.

A high standard of care and support was offered and staffing levels were generous. The staff team had opportunity to spend time with the Sisters and listen to them, so that a personalised service could be provided that was specific to the individual.

We saw that staff were very respectful and considerate towards the Sister's living at the home, taking care to explain what they were doing and why and allowing time for people to understand, such as when supporting people to engage in an activity or when helping people to move to another area of the home. Staff were patient when offering choices such as where to sit or what to do and did not pressure people for a quick reply.

We spoke individually with three of the Sisters living at the home who were consistent in telling us that they were very pleased with the level of care and support received. These people were also extremely positive about the qualities of the staff team that were described as, 'Very kind and caring'. Another Sister said, 'I am quite content here and well looked after'.

A very high standard of care and support is offered and staffing levels are generous. This means that the staff team have opportunity to spend time with people and listen to them, so that a personalised service is provided that is specific to the individual.

Those living at the Cross and Passion Convent provided much positive feedback about the service provided. Comments included, 'The staff are very good, all of them. The food is very good and I am content'. Another person told us that, 'Nothing is too much trouble' and that she had complete confidence in the staff team. This same person also commented that she was very lucky to be living in such a lovely place with her own comfortable bedroom with a private bathroom.

A member of the nursing staff team told us, 'The actual medical and basic care is amazing, people can have a bath or shower every day, clothes are very clean and changed immediately when required, the environment is amazing, very serene and quiet, nobody waits for anything there is immediate staff attention'.

When asked, the Sister's we spoke with told us that they felt safe living at the home. One person told us, 'I feel very safe and well looked after here'. Written Information about raising any concerns is incorporated in the Service User Guide, a copy of which had been given to each person living at the home.

There was a very comfortable relationship observed between members of staff and the Sister's living at the home, making it easier for people to say if they were unhappy about anything. We observed that staff treated people with dignity and spoke to them respectfully throughout the visit.

Staff spoke positively about the training provided and of the support they received.

The Sister's we spoke with did give us general feedback about the manager and all members of staff describing them as very approachable with one Sister saying, 'I would just ask Matron and she would sort it out.'
