1 October 2013

During a routine inspection

We visited the home on the 1st October 2013. We met two of the people using the service and spoke with a person's relative. We spoke with the provider and two staff members. We looked at the records relating to people's care, the provider's policies and staff members' records. We contacted two social care professionals involved in co-ordinating people's care.

One of the people using the service told us that there were some issues relating to the support they received with their personal care that they were not happy about. They said that arrangements were being made for them to move to another home. However, we saw from written positive comments they had made in the home's comments and complaints book that they were generally pleased with the care and support provided. Another person seemed very happy when they spoke with us.

The relative we spoke with said they were 'very grateful to the staff' and said that the support given to the person using the service was 'exceptionally good.' Care professionals we spoke with were positive about the service. One said that the person for whom they were responsible was 'so much more settled.' Both mentioned their views that people's daily records, which were handwritten, could be improved by staff using a computer.

The home was clean, but would benefit from redecoration. Requirements stipulated by the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority following a recent inspection had been met.

During a routine inspection

The home is registered to provide accommodation for up to four people. At the time of the visit, there were three people using the service. They had complex needs which meant they were not all able to tell us their experiences. We spoke with one person, who said the home was 'good' and that the carers were 'nice' and 'kind.' We also spoke with relatives of the people using the service and care managers responsible for their care. One care manager said 'the standard of care and support is excellent.'

We observed the care being provided and saw good interaction with the people using the service, whose wishes and preferences were acted upon by the care staff.

People were able to choose their daily routine. They received prompting from staff regarding their personal care and their privacy and dignity was promoted and respected. People participated in a range of activities that reflected their individual needs and interests. Some went out on visits, supported by care staff. Varied and balanced meals were provided in accordance with people's preferences and dietary needs. The people received frequent visits from relatives and often spent time away from the home, staying with their families.

We found that steps had been taken to meet improvement actions set following our last visit. Work had been done to review and update the records relating to the people who use the service. However, the records relating to staff were not up to date.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to people who used the services and their representatives. We also clearly observed the care provided to people living in the home. The feedback we received was generally positive but a few suggestions were also made about improvements they would like to see happen.
