During a routine inspection

People using the service praised the staff and the care they received. One told us "I am well cared for". Another person said "staff are very kind, they do their best". Two visitors we spoke with on the intermediate care unit told us that the person they were visiting was now more able and confident about returning to independent living, and that their care had 'done its job'.

We found that people and/or their relatives were involved in their care and treatment and were asked to give their consent. People using the service told us that staff asked them for their permission and explained what they were going to do before carrying out care and treatment.

Appropriate care planning records were in place for the people using the service. These were regularly reviewed and updated, however some records were not fully completed or did not describe people's needs accurately and staff were not always recording the actions they took to meet people's needs.

Staff received training in safeguarding every two years. They also attended a variety of training courses, including health and safety, first aid and manual handling.

We found that there were suitable systems in place to monitor the quality and safety of the care being provided, including, for example, regular health and safety audits and audits of medication.

3 September 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four residents and three relatives during our inspection of Brymore House Care Home with Nursing on 03 September 2012.

Residents and relatives spoke well of the care, treatment and support provided in the service. They were complimentary about the staff team, saying the staff were 'kind', 'approachable', 'nice' and 'patient'. However some residents and relatives told us the felt the service would benefit from additional staff, particularly during the afternoon.

People were treated with dignity and respect. They were spoken to kindly by the staff, all of who seemed to know the residents well, and understood their needs and preferences.

We observed lunch in the dining room during our inspection. We observed that people received good care and support.

The premises were well maintained to a suitable standard of cleanliness and all the areas we inspected were free of unpleasant odours. However, we found a few seat cushions with tears and some recently vacated rooms that had not been cleaned to a suitable standard.
