During a routine inspection

When we visited 2 Nairn Close and 9 Orkney Close we did so unannounced which meant that no one who lived at or worked at the service knew we were coming. During our visit we met three of the people that lived in the houses. We also met and spoke with the manager and two support staff. Following our visit we spoke by telephone with a person's relative.

People appeared comfortable and relaxed in the company of the staff and their environment. Staff included people in everything they did, either by discussing the morning's activities or through suggestion and encouragement. We saw that they treated people with kindness, and gave them time to make decisions or respond to suggestions. Staff also knew people's non verbal methods of communication and responded to them appropriately.

People had care plans in place that identified their care and support needs. These were reviewed and evaluated regularly and provided current information. A relative we spoke with told us that they were involved in their family member's care and support as they attended review meetings. They said, "We have a review meeting soon, they are held twice a year."

Staff were supported with regular meetings and discussions to provide the care and support people required.

Systems were in place to monitor and evaluate the quality and safety of the service provided.

During a routine inspection

When we visited Orkney and Nairn Close we met with four of the five people who used the service. We met and spoke with the registered manager and two members of staff. We had a telephone discussion with one relative about the care their family member received at the care home.

The people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us in detail about their experiences. When we met with them they smiled when we asked them how they were and gave very brief answers when we asked about the activities they enjoyed. We found that staff knew people as individuals and understood their personal needs and ways of communicating those needs. We saw that people were relaxed and at ease with staff and within the home environment.

A relative we spoke with told us, "I am happy with the way staff support XX. I always ask her if she is happy when I see her and she tells me she is."

The environment was homely with framed photographs displayed of people enjoying their holidays and other activities they did. We saw each person's bedroom was clean, warm, well furnished and reflected the person's individuality.

We found people who used the service had staff support to do the things they enjoyed, such as shopping, going to the cinema and taking regular holidays.

Staff told us they felt supported by the manager and had the skills they needed to deliver the care people using the service needed.

During a routine inspection

Some of the people who use the service were unable to express their views to us. We were introduced to five of the six people who live at Nairn and Orkney Close. The sixth person was on a trip to London.

People were not forthcoming with their views of the service but were happy to answer questions about the activities they had undertaken that day.

There was a social worker at the home on the day of our visit, this was her first visit to the service and she could therefore not comment on the home. We spoke to staff on duty and observed people and saw that they were well looked after, had a good relationship with staff who were kind and patient. People appeared to be at ease in their surroundings and the home was comfortable and well maintained.
