All Inspections

18 November 2013

During a routine inspection

On the day of our inspection people were unable to tell us about their experiences of the service due to their complex support needs. We therefore spoke with two family members and observed the care being provided to people. We also spoke with three staff members and the manager who supported people.

We found people and family members were involved with providing their consent regarding the planning of care of people using the service.

Relatives we spoke with told us that the care that was discussed with them matched the care that was being provided to people using the service. They also told us they were regularly kept up to date about the changes made to people's care.

We saw that the care plans were person centred and reflected people's individual needs. We noted staff were compassionate and caring when supporting people. We found there were risk assessments available to inform staff on how to manage any identified risks for people.

We noted the home was clean and there was a cleaning schedule which staff followed. We saw checks were made to review the cleanliness of the home.

We saw the provider ensured that the appropriate checks were undertaken before a new member of staff was employed. The manager showed us the induction plan which new staff had to complete during their employment at 3 and 4 Southbrook Road.

We found the service was well led and had systems in place to monitor the quality of service being provided.

5 December 2012

During a routine inspection

The home consisted of two houses, number 3 and 4 Southbrook Road, which were situated next door to each other. Five people lived at the home in total. Each house had an upstairs, shared bathroom.

The people who lived at the home had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us in detail about their experiences. Therefore we observed care practice and staff's interaction with people when they were delivered care. We spoke with two relatives, two members of staff delivering care and the registered manager. We read the care records for two people who lived at the home.

We saw that there was a relaxed atmosphere at the home. Staff demonstrated they understood people's personal needs and the ways they communicated those needs.

We saw that the home was clean and well maintained. We saw that people's bedrooms were personalised and had pictures and photos of them on the wall.

We saw that people were able to move around the home freely and between the two houses if they wished.

On the day of our visit, people who lived at the home engaged in different activities throughout the day. For example two people went to a crafts morning and made calendars, which they showed us.

We spoke with a relative who told us they thought staff were 'exceptional' and that they are 'very supportive' of their family member.

11 January 2012

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this review to check on the care and welfare of people using this service and to identify whether previous standards have been maintained. No concerns have been raised about 3 and 4 Southbrook Road since our last visit.

We were informed that the previous manager no longer works at this service and a new manager has been employed. This manager was taking leave at the time of our visit. An acting team leader has been put in post until the manager's return. During our inspection we identified that quality assurance systems had not been maintained and people's support plans required updating. We observed that people are asked whether they are happy and those people that we saw appeared to have their support needs met. The acting team leader was aware that some of the processes had slipped and the action to take to address this.

We arrived at the home as people were leaving to visit the shops or undertake other activities outside of the home. We saw that people were dressed appropriately and appeared happy to be going out.

We spoke to three support workers, the acting team leader and the assistant team leader. Everyone had a good knowledge of the needs of people under their care. Staff said that they enjoyed working at the home, and were particularly proud of the way that they meet individual's social and leisure needs.

We met with three people who live at the home, these people were busy in the morning and returned to the home at lunchtime or early afternoon.

People appeared to be at ease in the home. Staff were attentive to people's needs, had a caring attitude and appeared to get on well with those under their care.
