All Inspections

21 October 2013

During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection there were 26 people living at Hall Grange. We spoke with six people using the service and two visiting relatives and asked them for their views about the care and support received. The majority of people spoke positively about their experiences. One person said, 'I think the care is good. I feel very safe and looked after.' And 'My carer is lovely. They're all nice.' Another person told us, 'The staff are always cheerful and pleasant. It was a complete muddle to me when I first moved in, but staff were always there and could help me.' Another person said, 'Staff are excellent.' A visiting relative told us, 'It's marvellous. They have a very nurturing side here.' Another relative said about staff, 'They've been very attentive.' They also said, 'Sometimes it's not always clear who's' in charge at weekends.'

We looked at other information to see what people thought about the care and support they received. We saw from the last 'residents survey' from 2012, the majority of people that responded said they were happy living in the home and satisfied with the standard of care.

We observed from people's individual records their care and support needs had been assessed and support plans were in place to meet these needs. People had been given opportunities to express their specific choices and preferences for how they were looked after. People we spoke with confirmed their choices and preferences were respected and supported by staff. Staff carried out regular checks and assessments to identify any potential risks to people's health, safety and wellbeing. Where risks or concerns were identified there were appropriate action plans in place to prevent or manage these. From the records we looked at, information was reviewed and updated regularly so that staff had up to date information about people's current care and support needs. People using the service were involved in regularly reviewing their care and support needs.

Medicines were administered appropriately and stored safely in the home.

There were effective procedures in place to recruit and appoint staff and appropriate checks were made about staff's suitability to work for the service.

People were provided with information about how to make a complaint if they were not happy with the service. Their views and experiences were sought and acted on by staff. The service also had systems in place to monitor the quality of service that people received.

The home was clean and free from odours. Staff carried out audits to check the cleanliness of the home. Regular checks were also carried out of systems in place to prevent and control the risk of infection within the home.

From staff training records we saw all staff working in the home had received regular training to keep their skills and knowledge refreshed and up to date.
