Anjulita Court is a nursing home providing accommodation for up to 62 older people who require nursing or personal care. The accommodation is provided across 4 units, with each unit providing a different level of care and support to people with nursing or dementia care needs. This assessment was undertaken following CQC’s new approach: https://www.cqc.org.uk/assessment This is our first assessment of the service using this approach. The assessment, which included both on and off site activities, took place between 16 January and 06 February 2024. We carried out an unannounced visit to the service on 16 January 2024, when 61 people were living there. We looked at 3 Key Question areas: Safe, Caring and Responsive, and 5 Quality Statements: Safeguarding, Involving people to manage risks, Safe and effective staffing, Independence, choice and control, and Equity in experiences and outcomes. The assessment was carried out by 1 Inspector, 1 Assessor and 2 Experts by Experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. During the assessment we spoke with 16 people living at the service, 5 relatives and observed the care and support provided to people across the day of our visit. We spoke with a number of staff too, including the registered manager, deputy manager, area manager, hospitality manager, a registered nurse, 2 senior carers and a care assistant. We also reviewed a range of records. This included 11 people's care records, 4 staff files and 1 agency staff file: in relation to recruitment. A variety of other records, including policies and procedures, training and quality assurance records were reviewed as well. In addition, we sought feedback from the local authorities and professionals who work with the service. In general, we found good outcomes for people living at the service in all of the areas we assessed.

People told us they felt safe living at the service. One person explained, “Because staff know me well, they prompt me and I can carry on. I trust them totally.” Staff identified potential risks and took action to mitigate these. The provider also had systems in place to report, record and review any concerns that were raised. People were supported by staff who had the right skills and experience to provide safe care that met their needs. A relative said, “I think it’s a very good place to be, with excellent facilities and staff who are experienced in looking after older people.” Staff treated people with dignity and respect. They encouraged people to maintain their independence, choice and control as far as possible. A relative told us, “The care is very good and some of the staff are really caring; it’s natural to them.” People benefitted from care and support that was co-ordinated and involved them, along with others who were important to them. One person said, “My family liked it when they came to visit, they think it’s a marvellous place. I think it’s a good, decent place. Staff makes it easy to adjust, very obliging and kind, that’s what they are. Everyone is so kind and wants to help.” A relative added, “The current manager pulls it all together and keeps it solid and stable…I love coming to help, I feel welcomed. It’s a very homely place, people do work well together.”
