During a routine inspection

We spoke with the registered manager, the director, and four staff members. We also spoke with four people who used the service and two family members.

One person told us the staff were, 'A helpful crowd.' A second person told us they were, 'Very happy here, I like the staff and the registered manager.' A third person told us they 'Feel quite comfortable with the staff.' A fourth person told us the home was 'Alright and the staff are pretty good.' One family member described the staff as, 'Friendly and polite.' Another family member said staff were, 'Helpful and polite.'

We observed people being cared for by staff. We saw the activities co-ordinator play dominoes with people and decorate pictures.

Before people received care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. People received the care and support that met their needs. We found that medicines were managed in a safe way. We found that staff were supported by the registered manager and had access to training and development opportunities. We saw that people who used the service had individual records which were stored safely.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with six people using the service. They told us they felt safe in the home and staff looked after them very well. Their comments included "the staff are very good, they look after me very well" and "they know what I need and they do their best. Some are better than others but I'm well cared for.'

We saw that staff supported people in a professional and friendly way. People were offered choices about the food they ate at lunchtime and whether they took part in activities in the afternoon. People also told us they were involved in making decisions. One person told us "I usually stay in my room, but I can go to the lounge if I want to see other people.' Another person said "the food is usually very good. If I don't like what's on offer, the cook will get me something else."

We spoke with seven people working at Ashley Lodge, including nurses, care assistants, domestic staff and one of the directors. They were able to tell us about how they maintained people's dignity, respected their privacy and gave them choices throughout the day. They also told us there were enough staff, they felt supported and well trained. Their comments included "we're a good team, we work well together' and "it's a good place to work, that's why I stay. I've done all the training I need to do my job.' The staff we spoke with were aware of the risk of abuse and gave appropriate answers when we asked about actions they would take if they thought a person using the service was at risk.

They also said there was a varied activity programme that they could participate in if they wanted to. People said they could choose what time they got up, went to bed and where they spent their time. People were involved in the development and review of their care plan. People said the home was 'like a big family' and that it was 'run very well'.

All the people we spoke with said they felt safe at the home and could raise any concerns with the manager. A visitor said 'I've never left the home feeling worried'.

People said they had been involved in giving feedback on the quality of the service provided.
