Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. Feedback from the person was positive about the staff and their approach to them. They told us, “We have good banter and they have a good sense of humour which I need.” Staff had formed close professional and supportive relationships with the person which enabled better care and support.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. The person had an individually designed support system which enabled the person to lead their own individual lifestyle. We observed staff respected the person’s privacy and dignity whilst they supported them. The person had their own team of staff, which meant staff had a very detailed knowledge of their individual preferences and choices.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff supported the person to maintain their own skills and abilities, to maintain their independence as much as possible. Staff had developed a relationship of trust with the person and were able to explain and offer genuine choice to them in all the tasks and activities of daily living.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. The provider gave examples of advocating for the person in areas of their life where they needed additional support. We observed staff provided reassurance in response in a timely way to reduce the person’s anxiety.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The provider had worked on improving communication between the leadership team and the staff groups, and the provider actively supported staff morale and wellbeing.
