All Inspections

27 January 2012

During a routine inspection

Some people living at the home were not able to fully express their views verbally and the home used various communication methods to ensure people were able to make choices.

At the time of the inspection only one person was at home, the other two people were out on activities of their choosing with staff support. We observed that staff supported the person to make choices about how they spent their time at the home and the food that they ate.

We saw that the person appeared comfortable and relaxed with the staff supporting them. Staff interacted with the person in a kind and friendly manner creating a relaxed atmosphere.

Staff working at the time of the inspection demonstrated a good understanding of the person's needs and communication methods. We noted that they were relaxed and comfortable with the staff supporting them.

The home held regular service user meetings where people were asked their opinions about a variety of subjects. Minutes of meetings showed that people were asked about staff, activities, redecoration of areas, what made them happy and what made them sad. At the most recent meeting people were given the opportunity to look at colour charts and choose a new colour scheme for the communal lounge.

Staffing levels in the home were determined by the needs of the people who lived there. The care plan seen showed the required staffing level for the individual including any additional staff support needed to access community facilities. On the day of the inspection the home was well staffed and everyone was able to take part in their chosen activities.

Staff spoken with, and observed, appeared confident and well motivated. Staff said that there was good communication between all staff which meant that people received very consistent care and support.
