All Inspections

29 January 2014

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Accessible Orthodontics LLP in Oxford we met with the practice manager, the clinical director, two orthodontists and a primary care (dental) compliance consultant. We spoke with three patients, two parents of patients and with three members of staff.

Patients were given explanations of their treatment which they understood. One patient we spoke with said "they [the orthodontist] showed us pictures and had a mould to demonstrate [how the treatment worked]'.

Patient's welfare was taken into account when treatment was planned. A patient told us "they [the orthodontist] told me you need to look after your teeth or we don't put the braces in".

The risk of infection from practice processes and procedures was reduced. However, risks from the environment and premises had not been effectively identified, assessed and managed. For example, we did not find a legionella risk assessment in place or any evidence of management control measures to reduce the risk of infection from waterborne bacteria.

Staff were well supported to carry out their roles and responsibilities. Staff undertook training appropriate to their job role.

There were effective systems in place to assure quality of service provision. Clinical audits were carried out and results acted upon. For example orthodontists were reminded to check patient's medical history once a year.
