During a routine inspection

We visited this home on a weekday. We met the manager and two people who lived there. The manager demonstrated that she knew the needs and preferences of all the people who lived in the home. People who lived in the home looked relaxed and indicated that they enjoyed living there.

The home was warm, looked clean and was furnished in a homely way. There were no institutional features. In addition to their own bedrooms, people could spend time in the living room or the conservatory which overlooked the garden.

People's needs were assessed, their care was planned and staff delivered care and support according to people's needs and preferences.

People were encouraged to be as independent as possible. They were supported to carry out household tasks and to prepare food and drinks, where appropriate.

People were supported to be healthy and to attend appointments with a range of health professionals.

People were supported to eat and drink in sufficient amounts to meet their nutritional needs and their preferences.

There were good arrangements for the storage, administration and recording of medication. The pharmacist carried out regular audits of the medication.

People were cared for by sufficient numbers of suitable qualified and experienced staff. The staff team was stable, which meant that people knew the staff well.

During a routine inspection

When we visited The New House we met the person who used the service and although they could not tell us about their experience of care at the home they appeared happy and comfortable.

We spoke by telephone with the person's relative about the care their family member received at the home. We met and spoke with the responsible individual and had telephone discussions with two of the three members of staff that worked at the home. The responsible individual managed the day to day running of the service.

The person's relative told us, " XX is so happy there. They give 100% good care."

We found that staff knew the person well and understood their personal needs and ways of communicating those needs. Records showed that staff supported the person to enjoy their chosen activities and maintain friendships with family and friends.

The home was warm, clean and comfortably furnished. We saw the person's bedroom was well furnished with personal photographs of family and friends displayed.

We found that the person was supported appropriately by staff with their healthcare and medication. This ensured their well being was maintained.

Staff told us they felt supported by the manager and had the skills they needed to meet the identified needs of the person they supported.

All records we looked at were up to date, in good order and secure.

During a routine inspection

Three people were living in the home when we visited. We met all three and we talked with two of them about their experience of living there.

People told us that they were happy with the quality of the care provided. They told us they felt staff knew them well and gave them the support they needed. One person said that the registered provider knew when they were becoming unwell "and gives me my tablets.' Another person said that the home was 'spick and span' and 'the food's nice.'

People told us staff treated them with respect. One person said 'They treat me with respect and respect my privacy.'

We found that people could make choices about what they wanted to eat. One person said 'If I wanted something different, I could ask.' Another person told us they had particular wishes about their food and that staff took this into account.

People told us they could decide what they wanted to do. One person said they usually stayed in the home during the evenings and at weekends but 'I can do something else if I want to.' Another person said 'I decide what I want to do.'

People told us that staff looked after them. They said they made sure they had the medicines they needed on time. One person told us that, when they went out, staff 'ring me to check I have arrived safely.'

People living in the home told us that if they wanted something to be done differently, they could tell staff.
