Orford House residential care home is a care home providing personal care support to up to 29 older people. Orford House residential care home does not provide nursing care. At the time of our assessment 27 people were living at the service, some of whom were living with dementia.
We undertook this assessment due to the time since our last inspection and due to some concerns raised about the quality of care. We did not find any evidence to support these concerns. This assessment included a total of 14 quality statements.
Staff safeguarded people from avoidable harm. Staff assessed risks to people’s safety and implemented management plans to minimise those risks. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. However, care staff felt at times staffing levels were challenging and the management team reviewed staff allocation in response to this feedback. Managers made sure staff received training and regular appraisals to maintain high-quality care. Staff managed medicines well and safe medicines management processes were in place.
People had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy, and a nutritious and balanced diet was provided. Staff worked with other healthcare professionals to ensure people’s health needs were met and they achieved positive outcomes.
People were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff protected their privacy and dignity. People had choice in their care and were involved in decisions about their care. People were supported to be as independent as possible. We observed the mealtime experience could be improved, and the provider was taking action in response to this.
People knew how to give feedback and were confident the provider took it seriously and acted on it. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. A governance system was in place to review and improve the quality and safety of care provision.
