During a routine inspection

The Inspection took place on the 9 December 2015.

Kimberley Grace Care Home provides accommodation and personal care without nursing for up to 17 persons who may be living with dementia. At the time of our inspection 14 people were living at the service.

The service had a registered manager. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. Like registered providers, they are ‘registered persons’. Registered persons have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated Regulations about how the service is run.

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. People were cared for safely by staff who had been recruited and employed after appropriate checks had been completed. People’s needs were met by sufficient numbers of staff. Medication was dispensed by staff who had received training to do so.

People were safeguarded from the potential of harm and their freedoms protected. Staff were provided with training in Safeguarding Adults from abuse, Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). The manager was up-to-date with recent changes to the law regarding DoLS and knew how to make a referral if required.

People had sufficient amounts to eat and drink to ensure that their dietary and nutrition needs were met. People's care records showed that, where appropriate, support and guidance was sought from health care professionals, including a GPs and district nurse.

Staff were attentive to people's needs. Staff were able to demonstrate that they knew people well. Staff treated people with dignity and respect.

People were provided with the opportunity to participate in activities which interested them. These activities were diverse to meet people’s social needs. People knew how to make a complaint and complaints had been resolved efficiently and quickly.

The service had a number of ways of gathering people’s views including using questionnaires and by talking with people, staff, and relatives. The manager carried out a number of quality monitoring audits to help ensure the service was running effectively and to make improvements.

During a routine inspection

We found that before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. Their care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare.

We found people who used the service were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff in a clean and hygienic environment. People were made aware of the complaints system and the provider took account of complaints and comments to improve the service.

People spoken with said they were happy and well cared for, with one person commenting, "Everyone [staff] is friendly with me." One relative told us how staff kept them informed about their relative's care, "I sign their care plan once a month, it tells me how they are progressing and tells me what they are doing.'

During a routine inspection

The majority of people who were living at Kimberley Grace Care Home at the time of our visit had some degree of age or dementia related memory loss and were therefore unable to fully tell us about their experiences of using the service. We spoke with one relative who was visiting the home at the time of our visit and we observed how staff supported and engaged with people.

People we spoke with told us that they were happy living at Kimberley Grace Care Home. They told us that they were cared for and treated well by staff. One person told us that staff were 'lovely.'

Staff we spoke with had a good knowledge of the needs of people who were using the service. Staff demonstrated that they knew people's preferences for how they were cared for and supported. Staff told us that they supported people to remain as independent as possible and to make choices about their daily lives.

Each person had a care plan that described their needs and the level of support and care they required from staff. Risks to the health and safety of people were assessed and there were plans to support staff in minimising these risks.

People told us that they felt safe living at Kimberley Grace Care Home. Staff were trained to recognise signs of abuse and to prevent abuse from happening.

There were sufficient suitably qualified staff to meet people's needs and we saw that staff were attentive and supported people sensitively and discreetly.

During a routine inspection

People living at Kimberley Grace had a wide range of needs. Some people had varying levels of dementia and different communication needs. We were therefore unable to fully

understand everybody's specific issues.

Most people we spoke with told us that they were happy living at Kimberley Grace.

Everybody said the provider/manager and staff were very kind, helpful and caring and the food was good.

Some people told us how they were able to assist staff in daily living activities in the home such as washing up, morning coffee and afternoon tea and laying the tables. They said that they enjoyed doing these tasks and it made them feel they still had a purpose.

Some people we spoke with told us that staff were very good and helpful but they were always busy and in a hurry. One person told us that there was always a lot of disturbance at night; some people were not very settled at night.
