All Inspections

14 February 2014

During a routine inspection

At this inspection we spoke with a team leader, two members of care staff, two ancillary staff, the activity worker and seven people who used the service. The manager was away at the time of our visit. People told us they were generally happy at the service. Comments included "I feel like a queen", "People are happy here" and "Staff are quite good". However, one person said "It can be lonely sometimes".

We found that before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. There were consent forms in care records which had been signed by people who used the service or a representative.

Care and welfare was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. There were personalised care plans in place which gave clear information for staff on how to support each person as an individual. Care records were kept up to date and reviewed regularly.

We found that there were suitable infection control systems in place to promote good hygiene practice and maintain cleanliness. Staff were trained in infection control and had access to personal protective equipment when needed.

There were sufficient staff on duty to meet people's needs. However, we received feedback from staff which suggested that cover was not always arranged when staff were sick or on holiday. They told us that it could be difficult to do all that was required when this happened.

There were systems in place to record complaints and take the action necessary to try and resolve them. There was an up to date complaints policy and details of how to complain were in the service's resident guide.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with six people who used the service and two relatives who were visiting. We also spoke with three members of staff and the manager. People told us they were looked after at the home. One person told us it was "Very nice". A relative said it was "Absolutely excellent" and that staff were "Calm and patient". Another relative said "It feels like a home from home".

We found that care plans gave detailed information about people's preferences and decisions they had made about they care they wanted to receive. Care staff were observed to be polite and respectful.

We saw that people were supported to have a suitable diet and that if they had specific dietary needs these were catered for. People who were at risk of malnutrition were monitored to make sure they ate and drank sufficient amounts.

There was a robust system in place for administering medication. We found that medicines were stored appropriately and that records were properly maintained to make sure that people were protected against the risks associated with medicines.

The manager regularly monitored the quality of care that people received in the home. There were audits in place which made sure that any risks were identified and action taken where necessary. We saw that people and relatives or representatives were asked for their views about the service through feedback forms and relative meetings.

11 October 2011

During a routine inspection

People told us that they were offered choices in their daily routine. They gave examples of being offered a choice of meals and a choice of when they wanted to go to bed and get up in the morning. They said that they could choose whether to join in with the social activities provided each day in the home. Some people said they had been asked what their preferences were about their care when they moved into the home and some people knew what was written in their care plan. However, some people said they had not been involved in writing their plan.

Some people were sharing a bedroom with another person, but due to their dementia, they were not able to tell us whether they were happy with this arrangement. We asked the relative of one person if they felt they were happy sharing a room and they said that they had never expressed any concerns about this. People who were able to told us that they felt their privacy was respected by the staff. One person said, 'Yes, I feel that they respect my privacy, I have my own space'.

People using the service told us that they were receiving the care they needed and that they were happy with the standard of care provided. Comments from people using the service included:

'I am very happy with care',

'Couldn't be better',

'Very happy with the service',

'I like that the carers are easy to get on with, you can have a laugh',

'They help me with everything I need' and

'X (staff) is very good, we have some good activities'.

People told us that they enjoyed the activities provided and that they could have a newspaper delivered each day if they wanted to. They said they could choose whether to eat in the dining room or their own rooms. They said that they were always offered a choice of the main meal or an alternative. People said they enjoyed the meals that were provided and were happy with the range of options. Two people needed to have their meal pureed to help them eat it. We saw that this had been pureed all in together rather than in separate portions of the different food types. We heard one of these people say, after eating their meal, 'Was that it, but that was just soup'. Food that is pureed all in one portion does not give people the opportunity to experience the different flavours of the meal.

People that use the service told us that they felt safe in the home and that they were treated well. They said their belongings were safe and they had a secure place to keep valuables. Everyone we spoke with knew who they could talk with if they had any concerns about their care. Comments from people included 'I feel very safe here, they look after me well' and 'I have been treated with nothing but kindness'.

People using the service told us that they were happy with the facilities in the home and that the home was always kept clean and in a good state of repair. People told us that they enjoyed being able to get out in the garden for walks.
