Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 17 April 2025

We carried out an inspection of this service from 25 April to 9 May 2025. We assessed all 33 quality statements and followed up on the Warning notices in place for safe care and treatment and good governance. At the last inspection we found multiple breaches in relation to the need for consent, safe care and treatment, safeguarding people from abuse and improper treatment, notifications of changes, good governance and staffing.

The service is a residential care home providing accommodation and personal care to up to 15 older people. The service provides support to older people and people with dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 8 people using the service.

At this inspection we found 2 continued breaches of the legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance. The provider did not always manage people’s ‘when required’ medicines in accordance with national guidelines. The environment had improved but some hazards remained for people which the provider was addressing. There was enough staff to keep people safe, however, staff had not always received supervision in accordance with the provider’s policy. Improvements had been made to the kitchen hygiene and foods were handled safely. Staff had developed their understanding of consent; however, some time was needed for all mental capacity assessments to be completed when people’s needs changed. Governance systems and audits were not always effective in identifying or addressing areas for improvement. However, people were supported to have choice and control and could give feedback on their care. Staff demonstrated they knew people very well.

People were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff protected their privacy and dignity. They treated them as individuals and supported their preferences. People had choice in their care and were encouraged to maintain relationships with family and friends. Staff responded to people in a timely way. The service supported staff wellbeing.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of the service

Updated 17 April 2025

People were positive about the quality of their care. They felt safe and were fully involved in planning their care and understood their rights. People said they received high quality care from knowledgeable staff who treated them as individuals. They said, “I enjoy being here, the staff are very caring,” and “I can do what I like so far, it's good, the food is good. I can see the GP when I want. I can see my family when I want.” Several people described how staff treated them kindly. They also said they enjoyed the activities to keep them physically and mentally active. Some people could not directly tell us about their experience. We observed whether people and staff had positive interactions. This approach showed people were included and listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them. People told us they felt able to complain and were confident action would be taken, and improvements would be made if required. People knew staff and leaders well.
