During a routine inspection

Twenty people lived at Briarcroft at the time of our inspection. We spoke with four of those people. They were all positive about life at the home. Their comments included, "They (care workers) are all polite and lovely. I have not got a cross word to say about anyone'.

During our observations in the lounge and dining rooms we saw that there were positive interactions between care workers and people. We observed that care works had a relaxed friendly manner with people and treated them respectfully.

People we spoke with told us they got the care they needed. Comments included, "I am looked after fine thank you." We saw that people's individual needs were met and they had opportunities to engage in social activities.

The provider had suitable arrangements in place to deal with emergencies, such as personal evacuation plans for people in case of fire.

Prior to our visit we received a report of concern about a recent incident relating to the administering of medications. We saw records of this and the resulting actions by the provider. We found that robust action had been taken to prevent a recurrence.

We found that the provider had effective systems in place to protect people from the risks of potential abuse and had responded appropriately to concerns.

Records at the home were not always up to date which posed a risk of unsafe or inappropriate care.

The provider had effective systems in place to monitor the quality of care at Briarcroft.

During a routine inspection

Because of the complexities of people's illnesses, some people at the home were unable to express their views; therefore both direct and indirect observation was used to assess the wellbeing and happiness of people in the home, as well as speaking with them.

We spoke with 5 people receiving care at the home. People told us 'only have to press the button and the staff are here', "Everybody looks after me very well", and staff are "All so lovely" and they ' all do their best to satisfy my needs'.

People living at Briarcroft confirmed that they experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights. Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. We saw that the daily reports and care plans completed by staff included acknowledgements of people's retained skills, and care they could do for themselves, as well as the support they needed. This showed us that people's independence and individuality was encouraged.

People told us they felt safe receiving support from the staff at the home and said that staff were always very kind and helpful.

Staff told us they felt well supported by the owners. People we spoke with told us 'Staff are very helpful and kind' and 'As long as staff are kind that's all that matters".

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people received.
