All Inspections

30 September 2013

During a routine inspection

During our visit we met and spoke with all five of the current residents who lived at Dehnlea Rose. Whilst most residents were not able to take part in structured interviews, due to their complex communication needs, we were able to have short interviews with two people. We also spent time speaking with others and observed how they interacted with staff. We also interviewed a local authority practitioner by telephone following this visit, to get some independent feedback about the service.

From the observations we made, indications were that residents were comfortable and happy in their home. Comments from residents we spoke with were all positive and included "Staff are alright" and "No complaints." We noted people who lived at this service were included in decisions about their day to day activities as much as possible. Staff sought consent from people, either verbally or by observing people's body language. We noted residents were able to attract the attention of staff when they needed assistance with their care and welfare. We saw that staff understood the needs of residents and communicated well with them. We noted that there was a homely atmosphere within Dehnlea Rose.

Arrangements for managing mealtimes worked well and we noted that the special dietary needs of residents were catered for. The home was kept clean and fresh throughout and had received no complaints since the last inspection. Staff recruitment records, in the main, were well kept.

During a routine inspection

There were currently five residents living at this home. Two agreed to take part in detailed interviews, and the others were spoken with in more general terms. Our observations throughout the visit showed that residents were well cared for, and their needs and preferences were well understood and met by the staff at this home.

People told us that they liked living at this home and that staff did what it said in their care plan. We were told people felt safe at Dehnlea Rose and that "Staff do a good job.' We were also told that the home was kept clean and fresh, and that the overall quality of the service was good.

Following our inspection we also carried out telephone interviews with relatives of two of the current residents, and they were very positive about the home.
