All Inspections

3 January 2014

During a routine inspection

We were not able to interview in depth the people who used the service due to their communication abilities. We spoke with four of the five people living at the home, observed care and support interactions, spoke with three staff members and the manager, read care plans and looked at other records.

One person told us 'I like it here' and another person said 'they look after me well.'

We saw staff interacted with the people who lived there in a friendly, patient and respectful manner. They were familiar with their specific health and support needs, although not all the documentation for these was up to date.

Staff provided a varied and nutritious menu which the people who lived there were involved in developing. Support and assistance to eat was not always delivered in the most effective manner.

The home was clean, tidy and free from offensive odour. Staff were aware of the practices to prevent the spread of infection.

Staff told us they felt 'well supported' by the manager. They had opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge with training. There was a thorough induction in place for new staff members

During a routine inspection

We were not able to interview residents in depth due to their special communication needs, but we spoke with all six of the current residents during out visit. We also spoke with the home's GP during this inspection, and with a relative by telephone following our visit.

We were able to make observations about the care and attention people received throughout the day, and how their needs were met.

We noted that people had been consulted about the care that was being offered and given choices about whether and how they received that care. The GP we spoke with told us 'The home manages people's health needs well and contacts the GP's surgery in a timely way.'

People who were able to express themselves verbally told us they were comfortable and well cared for. One person told us 'It is a very nice place to live.'

People were cared for in homely surroundings that were kept clean and fresh. A relative who had been visiting the home for 16 years said they always turned up 'unannounced' and they had found the home to be clean and well kept at all times. They told us the bathrooms were always 'immaculate.'

We noted there were sufficient staff to meet people's needs, and this included supporting them to join in with social activities. None of the people we spoke with had had any complaints about this home.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not speak to people when we carried out this review, as we were only reviewing some improvement actions, made during our previous visit to the home in December 2011.

At the December 2011 visit, people who were able to communicate told us that they were happy with the care and support they received, and that their needs were being met. They said staff treated them with respect and listened to them.

29 December 2011

During a routine inspection

People who were able to communicate told us that they were happy with the care and support they had received and that their needs were being met. They said that the staff treated them with respect, listened to them and supported them to raise any concerns they had about their care. People told us that the service responded to their health needs quickly. One said 'all the staff are very good, they are friendly and give me the assistance I need.' Another said 'staff do understand the problems I have and give me time to do things. I also like to help out when I can'.
