During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

When we visited the Dales on 03 September 2013 we identified some infection control concerns related to laundry management. This was because improvements were needed to laundry management to reduce cross infection risks. Since then the provider has sent us evidence which showed the required improvements have been made.

These changes have included environmental improvements within the laundry, better procedures for managing laundry and further staff training. This has ensured laundry was now being managed in accordance with Department of Health advice and the home's own policies. This meant people were protected from the risk of infection because the improvements made have reduced the risks of cross contamination and improved infection control procedures.

3 September 2013

During a routine inspection

On the day we visited, there were 31 people living at the home. We spoke with sixteen people and two relatives and asked them about their experience of the home. We also spoke with an independent advocate who had recently worked at the home. We looked in detail at the care of four people who lived at the home. We spoke with 11 staff which included nursing and care staff, housekeeping, maintenance and kitchen staff. We also spoke with the registered manager and the provider.

One person said, 'You'd go a long way to find a home as good as this one'. Another person said, 'I'm well looked after' and a third said, 'staff are kind, they help you'. People were asked for their consent before any care or treatment was offered.

People's care needs were assessed and risk assessments and care plans we looked at showed how people were supported with their care and treatment. Staff we spoke with knew about people's care needs and how to meet them. We observed that staff interacted well with people, and were caring and compassionate. Staff responded to people's care needs and worked at a pace that suited them.

The home was well maintained and there was an on-going programme of decorating and repairs. People's equipment needs were assessed and appropriate equipment was available which was regularly maintained and improved. We identified some improvements needed in relation to infection control practices related to laundry management.

The provider was compliant with five of the six standards we looked at during this inspection.

During a routine inspection

On the day we visited, there were 30 people living at the home. We spoke with five people and four visitors to ask them about their experience of The Dales Nursing Home and looked at three sets of care records. We spoke with 10 staff which included the registered manager, nominated individual, nursing and care staff as well as cleaning and kitchen staff.

One person said "the home helps me with things I can't do on my own". Another said, "I like the entertainment and the food here". A third person said, "they look after me well, I like to be on my own and they respect that". People we spoke with confirmed that nursing staff and care workers involved them in making decisions about their care and respected their wishes. We found that people's needs and risks were assessed and detailed care and treatment plans were made which were regularly updated.

People told us they felt safe at the home, knew how to raise concerns and felt confident that concerns raised would be dealt with. Staff we spoke with knew people well and were familiar with their needs and wishes. Staff working at the home told us about regular opportunities for training and development and how they were supported through regular supervision.

The provider was compliant with the five outcome standards we inspected.
