Date of assessment: 29 January to 27 February 2026. Courtfield Lodge provides accommodation for people who require nursing or personal care for younger adults, and older people, including those living with Dementia. At the time of the assessment 47 people were living in the home.

An unannounced inspection took place to review the quality of care and compliance with legal regulations. We assessed all quality statements from the key questions Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well Led.

There were comprehensive audits being conducted to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, repairs were conducted by an in-house handyman who had the support of a larger maintenance/health and safety team from head office if required.

Medication was managed and stored safely, staff received the necessary training and competencies.

Care plans were detailed and being developed by the provider. An Emar (Electronic administration record) system had recently been introduced. Care was person centred and approaches were adapted from person to person.

People were supported to live healthy lives, with good quality food offered and fluids encouraged to prevent dehydration. Mobility and exercise was encouraged with exercise groups and lower level physical activities and games included.

There were no physical restrictive practices in place, capacity assessments were completed where needed and corresponding best interest decisions were made with the views of the person remaining central.

Particular care and respect was shown to people as they reached the end of their life. Family involvement was supported and encouraged with the purchase of a bed to allow family to spend the night in comfort.

There was a new manager in place, and they had made changes across the home. These changes had been well received by people, families and staff. Surveys highlighted staff satisfaction in management and their approachability.

However, at the beginning of the inspection, we had some concerns about cleanliness in some areas of the home, we discussed these with the management team. By the end of the inspection new equipment had been purchased and a deep clean had commenced. Cleaning schedules had been adapted and improved. One of the main bathrooms had also been renovated.

People's experience of the service

Updated 9 January 2026

People and their family members generally gave good feedback about the home and the care people received. Comments included “I have no major concerns about the home, all the residents appear happy and content”, and “It’s a friendly home, I am very happy here”.

We saw good interactions, staff showed respect, warmth and comfort, they stepped into the person’s reality where needed. Staff encouraged people to maintain their skills and independence. Staff asked for permission before entering rooms and supporting people with care tasks.

Comments about staffing levels were mixed, with a consensus that staffing seemed lower at peak times, particularly lunchtime. A person told us, “I have a buzzer, they don’t hang about, they answer quickly.” However, a family member told us response times were longer in the morning.

People felt safe living in the home, “Yes, I am safe, they make me feel secure as I get anxious”. Staff provided dignified, respectful care, “They talk to me and tell me what they need to do, so I know what is going on,” and “The staff are respectful, they listen to me and value what I have to say”.

There was an activity coordinator, and people enjoyed the activities on offer, “Activities are arranged each day,” people told us, “I can take part if I want to.” “There is always something for us to do at the table, and sometimes they take a few of us out to the local pub for lunch.”

Families and staff told us they would recommend the home to others.
