20 January 2014

During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 20 January 2014, we spoke with 12 members of staff including the manager and the area manager, three housekeeping staff, ten people who use the service and four relatives.

People we spoke with including relatives were very happy with the care and support. One person said: “They knock on my door and shut it when giving me a hand”. Another told us: “The staff are all very pleasant, I can’t fault them”.

We found that people's care records were current and reflected the needs of people who lived in the home.

During our inspection we found that infection control practice in the home were adequate and kept people safe.

The provider had a recruitment procedure in place to ensure that only people suitable to work with vulnerable people were employed.

An effective complaints system, people we spoke with told us that: “The management is responsive to complaints as communication is good and all issues have been resolved”.

During a routine inspection

The majority of people were satisfied with the care they received and found the staff to be friendly and helpful. People on the young persons unit felt that there could be more opportunities for activities which were more appropriate their age and ability. We were told that during the summer there were more things to do which interested them but that in the winter, there was less to do which they wanted to engage in. One person told us, "There are definitely enough staff here, it’s rare not to have enough” and that “We don’t do a lot in the winter, activities are mainly based indoors. In the summer it is better". Most other people were satisfied with the care provided. People told us that they were not happy with the quality of the food and that this needed improving.

People told us how their privacy and dignity was respected and that staff always close the doors when they’re helping people with personal care. Although we observed that the downstairs bedrooms did not have any net curtains which meant that people outside the home could see in to bedrooms if people’s curtains were not closed.

We observed the home to be visibly clean on the day, all the people appeared to have had most of their personal care needs met.

Overall standards were being met, we identified a small number of issues which we discussed with the manager at the end of our visit. We have also made reference to these in the report.
