During an inspection in response to concerns

During our visit we met and talked to ten people who lived at Edgecumbe Lodge. We spoke with people in communal areas and in their own private rooms. We asked people living in the home about the service they received and about the support they are given by staff. People who live at the home told us that they were happy, staff assisted them with their care needs, were supportive and kind. One person we spoke said 'The staff are so thoughtful and kind, they are like family to me', another person said jokingly 'I am happy, you just have to get on with things, I have one foot in the grave and another on a banana skin'. Another person said 'Nothing is ever like your own home, but the staff do their best to make us comfortable'.

We did not discuss all of the outcomes with some of the people who live in the home as their dementia did not give them sufficient understanding of the questions we would have asked, but two people told us they thought the staff were "nice" and "very friendly".

When we asked people how staff supported them one person told us 'The staff who work here help me to dress and assist me with my bath, but they are always very busy, I don't like to bother them too much', another person said 'I like the peace and quiet of being in my own room, the staff on duty always check on me and see if there is anything I need'. A third person told us 'Staff help me every day, nothing is too much trouble for them'.

No complaints or concerns about the services provided were raised with us by people who live at the home. When we asked people if they knew who to speak to should they have any concerns people told us; 'I have no worries, I have friends here and we all get along', another person told us 'I would speak with my daughter and she would sort things out'. Other people we spoke with assured us that they were happy, other people gave us the names of staff they would tell if they had any concerns.
