Effective – this means we looked for evidence that people’s care, treatment and supportachieved good outcomes and promoted a good quality of life, based on best available evidence.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people’s outcomes were consistently good, and people’s feedback confirmed this.

The provider made sure people’s care and treatment was effective by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them.

Assessments of people’s care were undertaken when they first moved into the home. These were detailed and took into account important aspects of people’s care including their life history and things they enjoyed doing. Monthly reviews of care plans and risk assessments were undertaken, and any updates were documented.

Relatives told us they were involved with people’s care. A relative told us, “We were all involved in the care plan when (person) first moved into the home.” Another relative added, “I was involved with the care planning, and we have had meetings with the social worker.”

The provider did not always tell people about their rights around consent and did not always respect their rights when delivering care and treatment.

Mental Capacity Act (MCA) assessments were not always completed where restrictions were in place to demonstrate decisions were taken in people’s best interests. In some people’s bedrooms there was equipment, including a sensor mat and a device similar to a bed rail, being used which they had not consented to using. The acting home manager arranged for these assessments to be completed after our inspection.

Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) applications were completed as needed and these were re-applied for when they had expired. Staff had completed DoLS and MCA training and understood about the legislation.
