During a routine inspection

We spoke with eight people living in the home (residents) and two relatives. They told us they were very satisfied with the care provided at Ashlands. Three people also told us they were involved in the planning of their care, and had consented and agreed to the written information in their care plans. One person said, "They know what I need and what I like to do". A relative said, "I feel involved in everything". We saw people had signed their care plans to indicate their agreement.

People praised the care in the home. Comments included, "Everything's still good; the same as last year", "She (a carer) makes me feel good", "They look after me so well; it's my home" and "It's very good here; no complaints". We saw the written information about people's care needs was detailed and up to date.

Residents we spoke with liked the food served and felt there was sufficient variety and choices and which met individual needs. We saw there were procedures in place to protect people from malnutrition and also procedures to ensure they received their medication correctly.

We saw there were good systems of staff support. The manager and other senior staff undertook supervision and appraisals with the care staff. The member of staff we spoke with confirmed there was good staff supervision and support and good training opportunities.

Ashlands had effective systems to monitor the quality of services provided and which involved asking the residents and visitors for their views.
