During a routine inspection

We (the Care Quality Commission) carried out this inspection as part of our planned review of inspections.

We talked with eight people who lived at the home. They all told us that they felt very well cared for. They told us 'Things have changed here lately and I feel more involved in what is going on at the home' and 'The staff are very good, they are so patient'.

People told us that at all times staff treated them with dignity and respect. They told us that staff always spoke to them kindly. People told us that they could talk to the registered manager if they had any problems and felt they would be resolved.

People were cared for by staff who had received training in the safeguarding of vulnerable adults. Staff were able to describe what action they would take if they had any concerns.

There is a low staff turnover with most staff having been employed at Tregertha Court for a long period of time. This meant staff knew people's needs well. Staff told us that they enjoyed working at Tregertha Court and the staff worked as a team. Staff were available in sufficient numbers with sufficient skills to meet people's needs in a timely way.

The care provided and care records, environment, and medication were all monitored to develop the service being provided. People told us that they felt involved in how the service changed to meet their needs.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out a responsive review of Tregertha Court to follow up on compliance actions which were made by the Care Quality Commission following our inspection on 6 February 2012. The Commission had received an action plan from the provider on 11 March 2012 which detailed how they intended to address the areas of concern that had been identified.

At the time of this review there were 30 people living in the care home.

We talked with nine people who lived in the home although we were not able to communicate effectively with everyone due to their physical or mental health needs. We spoke with one relative who was visiting at the time of our review and four staff members. We spoke with the registered manager of the care home.

People who lived at Tregertha Court told us that it was a nice place to live and that staff were kind. Comments included, 'I think it's very nice', and 'it's good to live here'. When asked about the staff people told us 'they all look after me well', 'I can't find any fault' 'they are very nice'. One person who lived at Tregertha told us 'I think that they are a bit understaffed ' sometimes they come quickly other times they don't'. We observed interactions between the staff and people who lived in the home and saw that staff were friendly, respectful and attentive to the people they supported. People talked to us about the activities they enjoyed, and the meals provided in the home.

People told us, 'you have a choice of food, it's written on the notice board'.

Another person said 'the food is wonderful here'. A further person said about the food 'Meals on the whole are ok, odd ones are not so good but if you ask nicely they will accommodate you'.

One person said they felt that there was enough going on and that they are supported to attend social groups outside of the home. They told us that they had been involved in their care plan and that staff always knocked on the door before entering.

Further comments about the staff and care provided included,

'The staff are kind ' there is nothing wrong with the staff.'

'You can get up and go to bed when you want to'.

'You can go out to the town, I don't, but I know that people do'

One person said that 'The staff do listen to you, if you speak to the deputy you get things done quicker'.

'You can talk to the staff if you have a problem, the manager is approachable'.
