During an inspection looking at part of the service

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We looked at photographs of a recent holiday people using the service went on and saw they were happy. We observed interaction with staff and people using the service and both responded well to the other.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who use the service who told us that they liked the home and regularly went out on trips. They also told us that staff were friendly and gave them the care that they needed. We found that care was not always given as described in people's care plans.

6 December 2011

During a routine inspection

There were 11 residents living at Hastings Lodge and three residents living at Hastings Cottage when we visited on 6 December 2011. We spoke with one resident and two members of staff to ask for their comments and observations. We spent thirty minutes in a communal area of the home, observing residents' experiences of care and assessing the quality of support they received.

One resident told us that she had lived at the home for many years and that it is a 'lovely home' with many activities to do.

We observed that residents were treated with dignity and respect by staff and were involved in the planning and delivery of their care. We observed that staff provided good support to residents over lunch time and thought had been put into making meal times more enjoyable for residents. We observed that some residents did not always receive support to communicate with staff and visitors to meet their individual needs as stated in their plan of care.
