During a routine inspection

People were asked for their consent before care was delivered. Family members told us that staff kept them up to date with their relative's care and had taken time to get to know their relatives.

We found people had their needs assessed and these assessments were used to develop personalised care plans. Relatives told us people were encouraged to be independent and participate in a range of activities. We observed that people appeared calm and happy.

We found the provider had policies and procedures for the safe administration of medicines. Staff had completed safer handling of medicines training and had their competency assessed annually.

Staff told us they were well supported by their managers. They said they found the home "Very supportive and the management are lovely." Staff had the opportunity to work towards additional qualifications and more specialist training.

The provider asked relatives and professionals for their views. Their feedback included, 'Ella McCambridge is an excellent home, with high standards of care'; 'The staff are polite' and "They offer excellent care to all residents." However, we found that audits were ineffective in checking on the quality of care delivery, including the administration of medicines.

Relatives were aware of the provider's complaints procedure and knew how to make a complaint. Family members we spoke with said they had no concerns about their relative's care.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods which included observation to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because most of the people living in the home had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We saw that staff involved people in making decisions with regard to every day activities such as choice of food and activities.

We spoke with seven people who lived in the home who were able to tell us their experiences, they told us they were involved in decision making about every day living in the home. They said the staff were excellent. They said there was plenty to do if people wanted to become involved in the activities. Comments included:

"Staff are around when you need them."

"Staff are very helpful."

"I can get up and go to bed when I want."
