Our view of the service

The surgical service included general, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, vascular and cosmetic.
On arrival at the hospital, there was a large waiting area where patients were booked in by reception staff. There were 2 other waiting areas located next to the ward and diagnostic imaging department, which provided a quieter space for patients waiting for their appointment.
The surgical and medical services had a ward area comprising of 4 admission pods, 4 bedded high-care recovery room and 8 recovery pods on the ward. There were 2 theatres (one theatre used for endoscopy).

At the inspection the endoscopy list was in the morning and the surgical list was in the afternoon.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with patients using the surgical service at Buckshaw Hospital. Patients were consistently positive about their experience from admission through to discharge.

Patients told us staff were welcoming, kind and professional throughout their care. They said staff kept them informed about their treatment, communicated clearly, and took time to answer questions and provide reassurance before and after surgery.

Patients told us the waiting areas were comfortable and suitable for their needs. They knew which staff were responsible for their care and said they received support promptly when required.

Patients told us their pain was assessed and managed appropriately. They described the service as efficient, with prompt appointment times and a smooth discharge process.

The hospital monitored patient experience through the Friends and Family Test (FFT). Hospital-wide data for February showed that 118 patients completed the survey, with 95% rating their experience as very good, 3% as good and 2% as poor. These results related to feedback from patients across the hospital and were not specific to the surgical service.
