KEMP Hospice is a charitable organisation situated in Kidderminster offering day hospice care to adults with life limiting conditions within Wyre Forest and Tenbury Wells area. The service offers clinical care from a team of registered nurses. This includes a holistic needs assessment and ongoing monitoring of patients attending the hospice for care and support. The service also offers occupational therapy, an exercise and wellbeing programme, creative arts, welfare and financial advice and complementary therapy. It also offers bereavement support for families who are supporting or have lost a loved one.

It does not offer in-patient facilities and at the time of our site assessment did not offer hospice at home services.

Facilities included communal lounges, a dining area, a triage room, therapy rooms and activity rooms.

Referrals are accepted for patients who need support with symptom control, complex psychological or social needs, finance and welfare support, rehabilitation or therapy to maintain function and wellbeing, difficulties coping with their illness and for advanced care planning support. From May to October 2025 the service received 118 referrals. The average monthly caseload for the nursing team was 36. Most patients attended the hospice however there were between 2 to 8 patients a month who were offered support in the community.

The clinical service employs 15 staff. There is a head of care and quality who was the CQC registered manager and a care service manager in post. There were 3 registered nurses, a clinical nurse specialist in palliative care and 2 bank health care assistants employed. The clinical team was supported by a wider holistic team of an occupational therapist, an exercise wellbeing practitioner, a complementary therapist, a catering manager and a creative artist.

KEMP Hospice has been registered with the CQC since 2010. The service is registered to provide the following regulated activities: Treatment of disease, disorder or injury. The current registered manager has been in post as registered manager since 2022. The service was last inspected in 2016 and was rated good.

This was a comprehensive short notice announced assessment of KEMP Hospice. We gave short notice to ensure the relevant staff were available and we had opportunity to observe care being delivered.

The onsite assessment was undertaken on the 18 November 2025. Two CQC inspectors and a specialist advisor were onsite and an expert by experience undertook off site calls with people who use the service. The onsite visit was followed by staff and manager interviews, and a review of information requested by CQC and sent to us by the hospice. We spoke with 12 members of staff (including managers, nurses, healthcare assistants, therapists, administrative staff and volunteers. We spoke with 10 patients, 1 relative and carer, and 1 external professional. We reviewed 6 sets of patient notes and observed an assessment and ongoing care in the hospice. We reviewed 3 staff files.

People's experience of the service

Patients told us the provider operated a caring and responsive service that maximised people’s independence as well as their physical, social and emotional well-being. They said there was enough staff,and the environment was clean, safe, and welcoming. Patients told us staff worked in partnership with other teams and their GP to meet their needs and pain relief was given when needed.

Feedback from patients about the service was overwhelmingly positive. Patients talked about how staff supported them whilst at the hospice and also helping them where they needed additional help at home or a GP appointment. People described staff as caring and compassionate and made comments such as,“the nursing staff are very caring and compassionate, they are always interested in how I am. They look after us excellently.”
