The provider had systems to ensure that people who used the service received care and treatment, that was appropriate, met their needs and was reflective of their personal preferences.

Staff kept up-to-date with current evidence-based practice, and had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.

Staff confirmed patients’ consent for scans in line with legislation and guidance and understood their responsibilities.

We do not assess compliance with the Ionising Radiation regulations 2017 and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) regulations 2017 (IR(ME)R) but we do request services to provide evidence that demonstrates their compliance to inform our findings.

Patients were referred into the service by other healthcare professionals. We discussed the systems for ensuring these healthcare professionals were appropriately entitled to refer for these scans under IR(ME)R. For the relevant UK based healthcare professionals, a service level agreement was in place to assure the provider that the referrer was adequately trained and qualified to make referrals. This system was not in place for non-UK based healthcare professionals. Instead, a less robust approach was taken. We discussed this with the registered manager and were assured it would be addressed and rectified.

We saw evidence that all scans were justified and graded as required by legislation.

Staff felt the service supported them to develop and enabled them to take on responsibilities.
