Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff supported people to exercise their right to independence, choice and control at differing levels dependant on their healthcare, and dependency needs and mental capacity. People were supported to understand their rights by using different communication techniques, and languages. Two people had reverted to their first language which was not English due to their dementia. A nurse showed the inspector a list of words in their first languages with translation to English words which the staff were able to use to aid communication and understanding. The nurse said that neither person had access to language specific T.V. channels but 1:1 care staff had a tablet they could use to access google translate and YouTube for language specific programmes. A person using the service said, “I join in the activities but don’t particularly like them. I could suggest other activities if I wanted, staff are good.” A person using the service said, “I’m helped to do as I choose.”
