During an inspection looking at part of the service

We visited Weka House to check that improvements had been made following our previous inspection in April 2013.

We spoke with three residents, one support worker and the assistant manager and we looked at documents held in the home and asked for further information to be sent to us after the inspection.

We found that care was delivered in a clean environment. People told us they felt safe at the home. We saw that money and valuables were held securely on behalf of people who lived in Weka House and accurate records of people's finances were kept.

30 April 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke to three people who live at Weka House. We spoke to two care workers and the service manager. One person told us 'the staff are very supportive'. Two people we spoke with told us they were given choices about their care.

We saw that staff treated people with respect. People told us they were able to make their own decisions about the support they wanted from care staff. We saw people preparing their own food and that they were able to decide when to get up in the morning. The records we looked at were detailed and related to the care that we saw was given. Care plans and risks assessments were updated monthly and people were asked to sign them. Most people in the home were able to travel independently and went out locally on their own. One person required assistance and was taken out frequently by care staff and this was written down.

Care staff we spoke with told us they were well supported by the organisation and they had regular relevant training such as challenging behaviour management and safeguarding adults. They told us they had access to regular supervision.

We saw that the records of one person's money were not accurate so people were not protected from the risk of financial abuse. We saw that the toilets and bathroom did not have any means of people drying their hands after washing them and one toilet did not have any soap. This meant that people may not be protected from infection control risks.

28 June 2012

During a routine inspection

Two care workers and a deputy manager were present during most of the inspection. We observed and talked to three people using the service. We also checked people's files and documents such as the home's policies, procedures and the staff rota.

The home was clean, warm and had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. People using the service looked well and we noted they were able to choose what to eat, when to go to bed and when to get up. We saw that people were able to travel independently to access facilities in the community.

People told us that they were able to discuss their needs with staff. However, one person said they wanted to move on to live independently in the community but this has not happened for them. The deputy manager said this would be addressed in a meeting which would soon take place.

People were satisfied with the care and support they received. They said they knew how to complain if they were not happy. People felt that staff were available to respond to their needs.
