All Inspections

30 July 2013

During a routine inspection

As part of this inspection we reviewed staff recruitment procedures and records management. This was following non-compliance identified at the last inspection on 26 and 28 February 2013.

We spoke with the provider, the registered manager who is referred to as manager in the report, the practice nurse, a dental nurse/receptionist, the deputy manager, a medical secretary and seven people who used the service. We looked at treatment records, building and equipment records and staff documentation.

This told us people had been provided with sufficient information about their care and treatment. They had been asked for their consent before any care and treatment had been provided, and that the staff had acted in accordance with their wishes. People's care needs had been delivered in line with their individual treatment plan.

The provider had ensured that the building and equipment was safe to use and met the needs of people who used the service.

Recruitment practices were in place. Staff had the right skills and training to undertake the role designated. We observed staff to be professional and caring in their approach to people who used the service and when dealing with telephone queries.

The records needed for the management of the service had been maintained and were accurate and up-to-date and had been stored securely.

26, 28 February 2013

During a routine inspection

The provider had informed us that the previous registered manager had left. However the previous registered manager had not yet deregistered with the CQC at the time of the inspection; therefore their name still remains on any reports until this has been completed. We spoke with the provider, the registered manager who is referred to as manager in the report, a practice nurse, the training provider for the service, a dental nurse, a dental nurse/receptionist, a receptionist and, five people who used the service. We looked at a care and staff documentation.

This told us people had been asked for their consent for any care and treatment, and that the staff had acted in accordance with their wishes. People had been involved in making decisions about their care and treatment.

People's care needs had been assessed and delivered in line with their individual treatment plan.

Appropriate arrangements were in place for the management of medicines.

The organisation's recruitment practices had not always been followed. Appropriate security checks had not always been completed as part of the recruitment process.

Recruitment records and staff training records were not fully up-to-date.

20 February 2012

During a routine inspection

We obtained information from surveys, supplied by the provider for people who used the service to complete in 2011. The outcome of these surveys recorded that the majority of respondents stated that the overall experience of Sussex Medical Chambers had been very good or excellent.

Staff members we spoke to told us that they were receiving the training and suport they needed to meet individual people's care needs.
