During a routine inspection

We spoke with one person who was able to tell us their views and experiences of living at the home. They were satisfied with the care and support provided to them and said they were always treated with dignity and respect by the staff. They felt they were involved in their care and their preferences were taken into account.

We spoke with two people who were visiting their relatives who live in the home. Both were pleased with the care and support that was provided. One person said 'The best thing about this home is how approachable and friendly all the staff are.' Another relative told us they were always made to feel welcome when they visited and felt involved in their relative's care.

We found improvements had been made since our last inspection in October 2012 when we had concerns that people's care records did not contain all the information required for care workers to deliver care effectively. At this inspection, we found that the service had addressed this concern. We looked at the care records for three people who lived at the home. We found they had enough information to help staff to care for and meet people's needs.

During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drink available. This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met.

The inspection team was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector joined by a practising professional. We spent time with sixteen people during the inspection visit. Five people were able to speak with us to tell us their views and experiences of the service. We also spoke with a visitor who had come to see their relative.

During the visit we observed the care and support being provided. Staff were respectful and explained what they were doing before delivering care. People's choices and instructions were listened to and acted upon. We observed that staff respected people's preferences during the day about when they wished to get up. People told us they were treated with dignity and respect. One person said "They are always nice when they talk to me."

We observed people eating their food at lunch time. People who needed assistance were appropriately supported by members of staff. However, none of the people we spoke with were able to tell us what food was being served for lunch. One person told us, 'It is usually on the board in the dining room but they haven't written it on today.'

People we spoke with told us they enjoyed the food. One person said, 'Anybody who says the food is no good here would be wrong. It is always very good. We are well looked after.'

People had the option to eat their meals in their room if they preferred. One person, told us they liked to eat in their bedroom most of the time and that the staff always brought their food to them. They also said 'They are good, they come and knock to see if I am alright and if I want a drink or a cup of tea.'

People told us they felt safe in the home and they would feel able to raise any concerns. One visitor we spoke to who was visiting their relative told us they would be confident to let the staff know if they were unhappy with anything.

During a routine inspection

"Where would I be if I hadn't come here , it's excellent" "It's much better here now. I have just had my eyes checked, first time in 2 years. The new manager made the appointment for me" "Everything is very good, all of the staff are really good at their job". "The staff are very good" "you can't fault it here, the staff are excellent" and one relative wrote in a survey, "The BBQ was very good, the staff were very good, they looked after everyone".

In discussion with some of the staff, it was clear they had a full understanding of the issues of abuse and would clearly know what to do in the event of a suspicion or alleged abuse.

"I have had some really good training and I have done my NVQ level 2 & 3 (national vocational qualification) and another said, "I have started going on more courses now".

" There's been a lot of changes, it's like a palace now. The manager has made a big difference" and "It's better since the new manager came, she's lovely. Treats everyone alike, always asks how you are? I like her very much". Staff comments were, "The residents seem to like the new manager" "I am confident that with the new manager in place, things will continue to improve" and "The management have been brilliant with me".
