During an assessment under our new approach
The assessment began on 7 May and concluded on 19 May 2025.
Sunnyside Care Home is a “care home”. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing and/or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement dependent on their registration with us. Sunnyside is a care home without nursing care. CQC regulates both the premises, and the care provided, and both were looked at during the assessment.
During this assessment we looked at 24 Quality Statements.
At this assessment we spoke with 10 staff members including the registered manager, 2 area directors, kitchen and housekeeping staff and care staff.
Staff we spoke to knew how to keep people safe and report concerns. Staff received an induction and were provided with training. However, some staff told us they would benefit from additional training in supporting people with dementia or people who present behaviour that may challenge. Most of the training offered to staff was completed online.
People were not always encouraged to be independent or supported through meaningful interactions. There was a lack of engagement opportunities for people. Overall, people were treated with respect and dignity but not always offered choice. We told the provider about this, and they were going to review activities offered to people.
Feedback from staff and people was not always regularly sought. People and staff felt they could speak up and raise their concerns. There were processes in place regarding the provider’s oversight. However, these had not always identified areas of improvement for example the lack of people’s engagement or environmental concerns we found during this assessment. The provider had taken some action following our feedback for example in removing fire safety hazards noted within the home.
