During a routine inspection

We visited on 26 September 2013. Nobody knew we would be visiting. There were five people living at the home at the time of our visit. We spoke with all five people who lived at the home. Some people were able to communicate very clearly to us. Other people were less able to verbally communicate but were able to indicate their wishes to us. We asked people whether they liked living at the home. One person told us, "It's nice, I like it here".

We spent time observing how staff supported people within the home. During our visit we saw staff supporting people with care and consideration. Staff respected people's decisions as to where they wanted to be and what they wanted to do.

We spoke with two members of staff. Staff had received appropriate training, including the safeguarding of vulnerable adults. They were aware of their responsibility to keep people safe.

Care plans were clear and detailed what support staff needed to provide. We saw the service referred people to other health care professionals as and when necessary.

There were sufficient numbers of staff to provide care and support to people.

We saw systems were in place to assess the quality of the service provided.

During a routine inspection

We saw and spoke with all six people living at 130 Hipswell Highway. Some were more able than others to give an account of how they felt about their care and support. People's demeanour and responses to staff and each other indicated their well being. People were friendly, helpful and supportive of each other.

For much of our visit, five people were present in communal areas ' the lounge, dining room, and kitchen. One person chose to spend their time in their bedroom. We visited this person, and spoke with them. They said it was 'OK here'. Other people downstairs were more enthusiastic, with two people clearly able to say they liked living at the home, and two others confining themselves to brief, positive words, such as 'nice' and 'like it'.

We also spoke with a relative, who felt the home was 'excellent' and that people were very 'settled' there, and 'at home'.
