During a routine inspection

At this inspection we followed up on a previous compliance action related to assessments and care plans not containing sufficient information about people's needs and how these should be met.

During the inspection we used different methods to help us understand the experiences of people living at St Anne's Court. We spoke to four people who told us what it was like to live there. We also chatted to people over the lunchtime meal. We spoke with four relatives of people who lived at the home, and one visiting healthcare professional. We also talked to two members of staff and the manager.

People were consulted about how they should be looked after when they were able to be involved.

People were satisfied with the care or support they received at St Anne's Court. One individual said the home was 'very good'. Another person told us staff were 'very nice and caring'.

The design of the premises provided a safe environment in which to care for people. We found the home was warm, visibly clean and free from odour.

People, care workers and relatives told us there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. Records we looked at confirmed this.

People we spoke to were all satisfied with the care or support they received at St Anne's Court and people were made aware of the complaints system. The manager told us the home had not received any complaints in the past twelve months.

During an inspection in response to concerns

This was an unannounced inspection of St Anne's Court. We did this inspection because we had received information of concern from the local authority about the care provided to one person and records maintained by the home.

We talked with two people who lived in the home during our inspection. Both people told us they were satisfied with the care they received. They spoke positively about the way the home was managed and the staff that provided their care. They reported that staff treated them with respect, listened to them and understood their needs. People confirmed that the home had made contact with health care professionals on their behalf when they required this.

People told us that they were given choices about the food they ate and the food provided to them by the home was good.

During our visit we spent time observing people in the home. We saw that staff interacted with people in a positive way. Call bells were answered promptly to ensure people received the help they needed. Relatives and visitors were welcomed in the home.

It was clear that the home promoted a person-centred approach to care. The registered manager was able to tell us about people's likes and dislikes and gave us examples of how the home had responded to their different needs. The care provided was flexible and ensured that people were treated as individuals.

Although we identified many strengths in the way care was provided, we found that some improvements were needed. Assessments and care plans did not always contain enough information about people's needs and how these should be met. This meant that people were at risk of not receiving appropriate care.
