This service is a residential care home providing support to adults of all ages living with dementia, mental health conditions, and physical disabilities. We carried out this inspection in response to concerns raised about the care being provided, and because a significant period had passed since the service was last inspected.
The provider promoted a positive safety culture where incidents were reported, reviewed and learned from. Practical measures, such as sensor mats, were used to reduce risks. Staff at the service worked well with healthcare partners to ensure safe, coordinated care and smooth transitions. Safeguarding was understood, and staff supported people safely despite some care plans lacking detail.
Environmental checks were completed regularly, although some bathroom areas were outdated. Staffing was mostly sufficient, but afternoon coverage did not always support people’s independence. Infection control was well managed, including during an active outbreak, and the environment remained clean with good hygiene practices.
Medicines management required improvement, with excess stock, out-of-date items and limited reviews of regular ‘as and when required’ medicines. Staff administering medicines were trained and assessed as competent.
The electronic care system did not always capture all relevant updates, creating a risk that staff might miss important information. Not everyone had an end‑of‑life care plan, meaning staff did not always have clear guidance about people’s preferences if their health declined.
The provider generally treated people with kindness, empathy and respect. Staff were observed supporting people in ways which maintained their dignity, such as offering discreet personal care and helping individuals remain clean and comfortable. Relatives were welcomed and supported during visits. However, people were not always enabled to exercise choice or independence. Some individuals who wished to spend time in their rooms were discouraged due to staffing pressures, meaning their preferences were not always respected.
Staff felt confident to raise concerns and the provider fostered a workforce that reflected a range of backgrounds and experiences. The registered manager was experienced, passionate and focused on meeting people’s needs.
