During an inspection looking at part of the service

People told us they were happy living at Empress Lodge, that they liked the food and were pleased that they could do what they wanted to do for example, do very little on any particular day or go out to the shops and leisure facilities in the local community.

People commented positively about the staff and stated that they found them helpful and a caring bunch. One person told us, 'I enjoy meeting with my key worker' while another told us 'the staff helped me get to my medical appointments so that I remain well'.

People also told us that they were encouraged to keep links with their family. We were told that family contact kept them in touch with what was happening outside of Empress Lodge.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People told us that they enjoyed living at Empress Lodge. They were satisfied with the care and support that was provided by the staff in enabling them to continue to live in the community. One person told us, 'I generally chill out in the home and visit my mother in Ilford at the weekends'. Another told us 'Everything is good man. I went to see about my eye just now'. Everyone we spoke with told us that they were comfortable and felt safe in the home.

We spoke with some of the staff on duty who told us that things were getting better in the home. They told us that they were working hard to ensure that people were getting safe and good quality care at Empress Lodge.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People told us that the home and the staff were okay. Some people told us that the staff helped them with their medication, personal care and living skills. One person stated, 'I am happy here, as there is a nice bunch of people in the home. The staff are nice and although some service users have their off days, the staff are always helpful'. Another person told us, 'The new manager is alright and the staff are lovely'. This person also told us that they would like to move on from Empress Lodge and believed that the staff would help them to do so.

We spoke to several other people using the service and noted their comments which included: 'I am happy living in the home,' 'We get to go on holidays and had a good time last year,' 'The activities' coordinator helps us with practical skills like cooking which is really good,' 'Staff treat you with respect as they always knock on your door before entering your room,' 'My key worker goes through my care plan with me, which helps me to remind me of my goals' and 'I am doing great here. I have finished my college course and currently doing voluntary work two days per week'. Some people told us that they were in regular contact with their relatives and that the staff supported them in this respect.
