During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who used the service and one person's relative. They told us they were happy with the care and support provided at Rose Cottage. One person said they were 'quite content at the moment'. They said they liked to be as 'independent' as possible. Another person said they enjoyed spending time in their room, they said they always had their call bell nearby and did not have to wait long if they needed help. We found the provider had suitable arrangements in place to make sure people's care and welfare needs were identified and met.

One person told us the food was 'really tasty and home-made'. They said they looked forward to every meal. Another person said they food was 'always very nice'. We found the provider had suitable arrangements in place to make sure people's dietary needs and preferences were catered for.

People told us the staff were kind and respectful, one person said they were 'wonderful' and always 'cheerful'. A relative told us the staff were caring and never spoke inappropriately to people. We found the provider carried out checks to make sure staff were suitable to work with vulnerable people.

People told us the home was clean and when we looked around we found it was clean and in a good state of repair. Overall, we found the premises to be safe, we found two issues which required attention and they were addressing during the inspection.

We found the records were up to date and stored securely.

During a routine inspection

People who used the service told us they enjoyed living at the home and were very complementary about the care and support provided by the manager and staff. Comments included "The home is clean and comfortable, the food is excellent and all the staff are kind and caring" and "I am very happy living at Rose Cottage, all the staff are friendly and approachable and will do anything they can to help and assist you."

We spoke with two healthcare professionals and they told us they had no concerns about the standard of care provided at the home and staff always followed their advice and guidance. They also told us staff had a good understanding of people's needs.

The care staff we spoke with told us there were clear lines of communication and accountability within the home and they were supported by management to carry out their roles effectively through a planned programme of supervision, appraisals and training.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not speak directly to people who use the service when assessing this outcome. At the last inspection in November 2011 people told us that they were pleased with the standard of care and support provided and that staff were professional and caring.
