Our current view of the service

Good

Updated 6 November 2025

The date of assessment was 13 and 14 January 2026. Woodheyes is a residential care home providing personal care to older people with dementia and sensory needs. Care was delivered over 2 floors in 1 adapted building, with passenger lift access. The service can support up to 38 people. At the time of our assessment, 30 people were living at the service.

This assessment was prompted by the length of time since our last inspection.

The atmosphere within the service was calm and welcoming, and people appeared comfortable and relaxed in their surroundings. Feedback from relatives and professionals was also positive, indicating people felt well supported and secure in the care they received. The environment was safe and adapted to meet both general and individual needs, with a balanced approach taken to safety and security that promoted independence rather than restricting it.

The environment was safe and well-maintained, supporting people’s health, safety, and well-being. Medicines were managed adequately, with systems in place to ensure they were stored, administered, and recorded safely. People’s health needs were regularly monitored, and safe action was taken when changes were identified. Risks were assessed and reviewed so staff could provide safe care that promoted independence and well-being. The provider followed the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and staff understood how to assess capacity and support informed decision-making. The provider operated in line with the principles of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005, with staff understanding their responsibilities in assessing capacity and supporting people to make informed choices. When people lacked capacity, decisions were made lawfully and in their best interest.

People reported feeling safe and protected from harm and abuse. Staff had received relevant safeguarding training, and robust recruitment processes were in place to ensure staff were recruited safely.

People were encouraged to maintain their relationships. People’s representatives could visit the home at any time they wished.

Complaints were taken seriously and sufficiently investigated, and people and their relatives felt confident and supported in raising any concerns.

Staff responded to people in a timely way and were supported by the leadership to carry out their roles. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable, and supportive, promoting an open culture where both service users and staff were encouraged to provide feedback through a range of methods. Effective governance systems were in place to monitor and improve the quality of the service, including infection prevention and medicines management audits.

We found the provider and registered manager to be highly responsive to feedback throughout the inspection process and proactive in taking quick action to address any concerns identified.

People's experience of the service

Updated 6 November 2025

We spoke directly with some people using the service and contacted other relatives by telephone following the visit. People consistently told us they were very satisfied with the care provided and felt well supported and looked after by staff. Comments included, “They are so kind” and “All staff are thoughtful and kind.” Not everyone was able to communicate with us verbally, so we spent time observing people and staff interactions and aspects of people’s support. Throughout our time at the home, we observed positive and respectful interactions. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed, and there was clear evidence of warm, genuine relationships between people and staff. People approached staff freely, and staff demonstrated a strong understanding of individuals, using their knowledge to provide effective and responsive support.

People told us they felt happy, safe, and well supported. The home had a layout that enabled people to move around freely, access shared indoor areas and the garden and carry out daily activities independently.

One relative spoke of the staff team and said, “They are very patient with [relative].” Other comments included “[Relative] is treated very well.”

Those living at the home were supported to maintain their independence and exercise their choice and control over care. People and their representatives were actively involved in the decision-making process. People were treated with kindness and compassion, and their privacy and dignity were consistently upheld.

Overall experiences of using the service were overall positive. People told us they felt happy and safe living at the home, and this was reflected in our observations during the inspection.
