All Inspections

4 June 2013

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service, because some people had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences.

We saw evidence that care plans and personal 'planning books' had been completed with the assistance and consent of people who used the service. Both pieces of documentation had been produced in an easy read format which made it more accessible and understandable to people who used the service.

The five care files that we saw contained assessments that were updated periodically in relation to, health, psychological support, managing emotions and daily living.

It was evident during discussions with staff that they were knowledgeable about each person who used the service. We were told what action would need to be taken to de escalate a situation if challenging behaviour occurred.

A member of staff told us, 'I really enjoy working here, I like helping and supporting people' and 'My boss is very supportive.'

An easy read, 'your right to complain' fact sheet was included in every person's 'my health book'. We also saw that a comments book was available for people who used the service or relatives to make suggestions about the home.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service including observing care practices. Some people using the service had complex needs and were not able to verbally communicate their views and experiences to us.

We observed staff offering care and support during the lunchtime period and this was carried out with warmth and consideration. Throughout our visit we saw that staff had developed positive relationships and communication methods with people using the service.

People who used the service told us that staff listen to them and help them to make choices about the support that was provided and commented, " I can come and go as I please, I just need to tell someone that I am leaving the building", " Staff help me to stay in contact with my family" and " We can have what we want eat, it is my favourite tea tonight."

We spoke with people using the service who told us that they liked living at the home and that they liked the staff and that they were kind.

During a routine inspection

As part of our inspection we spoke with a number of people who use the service. They spoke positively about the staff and care provided and told us that staff treated them with respect. Everyone we spoke with felt they were involved in their care and in making decisions about their treatment.

We received comments such as "I go for a walk to the seafront" and "Yes I like living here" and "I like any of the staff."

After the visit we spoke with relatives who gave us mixed views about the care being received by their family member.

Comments included "Staff are unaware of his limitations" and "Happy to go to staff" and "Doing better than the last place they were in."

Everyone we spoke with told us that the food was good and they were never hungry.
