Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 20 March 2025.

The service is a residential care home providing support to older people living with frailty and dementia.

The inspection was prompted by an incident that occurred at the service. This incident is subject to further investigation by CQC as to whether any regulatory action should be taken. As a result, this inspection did not examine the circumstances of the incident. However, the information shared with CQC about the incident indicated potential concerns about the management of risk. This inspection examined those risks. We identified action had been taken to resolve this.

The provider was previously in breach of legal regulations in relation to person centred care, safe care and treatment, premises and equipment and good governance. We found the provider had made the improvements required and was no longer in breach of regulation

There was a sense of community and warmth within the service. The provider had good governance systems in place to ensure any improvements required were identified and actioned. Staff felt the management team were open and approachable, and there were regular opportunities for staff and management to discuss incidents or areas for improvement within the service to ensure lessons were learnt. Staff understood and managed risks and were aware of their responsibilities to safeguard people. The facilities and equipment met people’s needs and were clean and well-maintained. There were enough safely recruited staff to meet people’s needs. Staff managed medicines well and involved people in planning any changes.

Staff felt supported and respected. One member of staff told us, “I would not work anywhere else. It’s a lovely little home.” Staff felt able to approach the management team with any personal or professional issues in the knowledge they would be handled respectfully. There were close working partnerships with external stakeholders..

People's experience of this service

People were treated with dignity and respect by staff who promoted their independence and choices. One person told us, “It’s perfect here. I love it here. I love the atmosphere.” Another person told us, “I don’t have any issues here. I would not change anything.” A further person said, “I don’t think anywhere you went, you would find anything better than here. The food is wonderful. The staff are brilliant. Phenomenal.”

People were supported to continue practicing their faith and were engaged with by staff who knew them well. There was a variety of activities and entertainment options available to people, such as quizzes, walks in the local community and sitting in the garden. People’s bedrooms were personalised with photos and pictures which were important to them, such as pictures of family. People were supported to attend healthcare appointments in order to keep them as healthy as possible.

Relatives felt their family members were safe and well cared for. One relative told us, “It feels like a very caring home. It’s got a lovely, caring feel and I know [person] is living her best possible life there. She’s always happy to return if we take her out, and they make a real effort with all the clients. I couldn’t be happier with Bellsgrove and all they do for [person].”
